App Store product page header size
The App Store product page header is 3840 x 1646 pixels at 21:9, for both video and still images. A second, universal option is a 16:9 PNG at 5244 x 2950, the only file that can also serve as the search results asset. Sizes are exact, not minimums.
| Placement | Type | Ratio | Size (px) | Also required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product page header | Video | 21:9 | 3840 x 1646 | 30 or 60 fps · 5–30 seconds · .mp4, .mov, .m4v · muted by default, viewers can unmute · loops |
| Product page header | Image | 21:9 | 3840 x 1646 | .jpeg, .jpg or .png · no alpha / transparency |
| Product page header (universal) | Image | 16:9 | 5244 x 2950 | .png only · the one file that can also serve search results |

Why 3840 x 1646 and not a rounder number?
3840 divided by 1646 is about 2.333, which is 21:9. The height is not a round number, which is exactly where exports go wrong: design tools that scale a master proportionally can land one pixel short. App Store Connect checks the exact size, so 3840 x 1645 fails.
If you design at a smaller size, design at a size that scales cleanly, or resize non-proportionally by that last pixel on export. Better still, design at 3840 x 1646 from the start.

Which header formats can I upload?
Video: .mp4, .mov, .m4v at 30 or 60 fps, 5–30 seconds. Image: JPEG or PNG at 3840 x 1646 with no alpha. Universal image: PNG only, 5244 x 2950.
Transparency is not allowed in any of them. A PNG with an alpha channel fails even if it looks opaque, and so can a PNG that still carries camera or editor metadata such as an eXIf chunk.

Can one image serve both the header and search results?
App Store Connect has a "Use header asset in search results" option. Only the 16:9 PNG at 5244 x 2950 can satisfy both placements at once. The 21:9 header cannot, because search results use a 3:2 card between 1920 x 1280 and 3840 x 2560.
If you want motion in the header and a still in search, upload them separately: a header video plus its own search asset.
| Placement | Type | Ratio | Size (px) | Also required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search results | Image | 3:2 | 1920 x 1280 to 3840 x 2560 | .jpeg, .jpg or .png · no transparency |
| Search results | Video | 3:2 | 1920 x 1280 to 3840 x 2560 | 30 or 60 fps · 5–30 seconds · muted, cannot be unmuted · loops |

How is the header cropped on real devices?
Apple's specification page does not publish a safe area. The header and the search card crop differently, so the guidance is simply to keep the main subject and any text in the centre of the frame, and to check every case in App Store Connect's preview, which lets you switch device, orientation, localization and dark mode.
The path in App Store Connect is: your app → the version → Product Page Information → Header and Search Results → upload, or pick from the Asset Library → Preview.
How can I check a header file before uploading it?
Drop it into the checker on the /specs page. It reads the file in your browser and reports width, height, ratio, duration, frame rate, codec, alpha and leftover metadata against the table above. The free tool at appstoreheader.topxup.com does the same for still images.
VideoDuo's generator runs the same checks on the server after every final render, and a credit is only used once a file has passed them.
